SprutCAM: a professional CAM system

SprutCAM is becoming increasingly popular with users because of its intuitive interface, quick creation of NC programs, and what is also important, its price, which is considerably lower than with the competitor CAM systems. SprutCAM is a product completely localized for the Czech market. With SprutCAM one can make NC programs for different types of CNC machines: milling, lathe, multi-task, EDM and various cutting ones. SprutCAM ensures generation of NC programs with synchronization for single channel as well as for multi channel machines.

The options for the control of the non-standard components of the machines, such as supports, catchers, poppethead etc. are almost unlimited. The system can determine its own mechanisms with 30 moving axes, with every single one can being controlled directly from the PC. SprutCAM uses cycles for 3, 4 and 5 axis milling, lathe and EDM. In order to make the work at the mill-turn centers more comfortable, the cycles of the tools used are the same as the standard milling cycles. It suffices to choose the cycle output method (cartesian, polar or cylindrical coordinates) and the system will generate the necessary tool path. SprutCAM ensures the programming of the 3 axis milling on cylindrical surface without having to unfold the machined surface in the plane.

SprutCAM assures the positioning of the turning axes (index axes) at the milling centers by moving and transforming the origin of the coordinates. The machine can fully or partially support the work of the 3 axis components, such as angle head, indexers and other devices. SprutCAM will provide for an easy setting of the turning axes not only for these devices, but also for a machine of any configuration. Among the most popular machining operations, is of course roughing, grooving in the plane or cylindrical surface, hole drilling and many others including the finishing operations. And now several examples from the very many machining operations available, that will show the advantages of SprutCAM.

Holes machining

Automatic holes detection is part of the machining process. In the menu you can set whether to look for a pocket hole or to search by search by diameter (you can set the range to look for) or search by other criteria. Thus the CNC engineer gets the hole’s coordinates and its depth. All the values can be modified which is particularly convenient in order to identify the thread depth or preliminary drilling in the cases when the values do not match the model’s form. At first we create holes. Then we copy the ready operations for the thread and face. Then we set the technology parameters for the cycles. You have to enter the necessary depth of the thread manually and in order to get a face we enter the outer angle value as well as themiddle and upper tilting angles of the tool. We start the calculation and get the needed result.

Non-standard grooves

In order to machine a groove in the form of a sector, we choose a roughing operation for layer machining with last finishing pass (including the correction for radius). In the 2D Geometry tab we can create a tool path, which is followed by the roughing tool center. In SprutCAM it suffices to indicate one of the edges of the groove and enter the step value: for instance, if the groove’s width  is 16 mm, it is enough to set the edge and add 8 mm and we will get the movement of the tool axis in the middle of the groove. The finishing pass with correction is even easier: we select the edges which are going round the pass.

SprutCAM can handle any variety of forms on flat as well as on cylindrical surface.

Now let’s proceed to checking the technology data, making of the documents for the CNC engineer and the NC code generation.

SprutCAM gives a very useful tool to review all the operations in the system with data on the tools used and technology operations. The changing of the data in the dialogue window autmatically creates changes in the parameters of the corresponding operations.

After the collision control check and technology check we can proceed to generation of tools list and of the CLData. The tools list is created in the HTML format and is shown in the browser window as soon as it has been created. The page format can be set in the documents’ template which can be completed with  a company’s logo or text. By default, the document contains the heading filled out by the CNC engineer, project’s drawings, list of all the operations with additional information, tools and tool drawings list. The list of all the operations of a project contains estimated machining time of the whole project as well as of each operation. You only have to choose the postprocessor, which will generate the CLData according to the tool movement. As a result you get a text file, which can be opened in any text editor. It takes to copy the file to the CNC machine and the CAM system’s job is done.
